Apollo Hospitals Expands Proton Therapy Capabilities with IBA Partnership

Bringing the Proteus One Proton Beam Therapy System to India for Advanced Cancer Care
Apollo Hospitals, a pioneer in advanced healthcare solutions in India, has joined forces with Ion Beam Applications (IBA) to introduce the Proteus One Proton Beam Therapy system in the country. This strategic collaboration aims to revolutionize cancer treatment by enhancing access to cutting-edge technology.
The agreement was formalized in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, who represented His Majesty King Philippe, alongside Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson of Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd (AHEL), and Olivier Legrain, CEO of IBA.
Advancing Proton Therapy in India
Apollo Hospitals made history in 2019 by launching India’s first and only Proton Therapy facility—the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai—making it the sole provider of this advanced treatment in South Asia and the Middle East. Since then, it has successfully treated over 2,000 patients from 147 countries, primarily those with complex cancers such as tumors of the central nervous system, head and neck cancers, and pediatric malignancies.
With cancer cases in India rising rapidly—expected to reach 1.5 million this year—the integration of the Proteus One system will further enhance treatment precision. The system incorporates DynamicARC® beam delivery technology, designed to improve accuracy and reduce treatment duration.
A Commitment to Cutting-Edge Cancer Care
Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Founder-Chairman of Apollo Hospitals, expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating:
“Apollo Hospitals has always been committed to bringing the latest medical advancements to India. With the introduction of Proteus One, we reinforce our leadership in Proton Therapy, ensuring that Indian patients receive the best possible cancer care without having to seek treatment abroad.”
The partnership also signifies IBA’s continued trust in Apollo Hospitals. Olivier Legrain, CEO of IBA, highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two organizations:
“Apollo Hospitals has been at the forefront of proton therapy, and we are honored to expand our collaboration. Our partnership underscores the reliability of IBA’s technology and its role in transforming cancer treatment in India.”
Shaping the Future of Oncology in India
Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson of AHEL, emphasized the broader impact of this initiative:
“The future of cancer care lies in precision medicine, and at Apollo, we remain dedicated to pioneering innovations that improve patient outcomes. The Proteus One system brings a new level of personalization and effectiveness to cancer treatment, offering hope to thousands of patients.”
Beyond the technology itself, the collaboration will also focus on training oncologists and expanding access to Proton Therapy across the region. By strengthening its expertise in advanced oncology, Apollo Hospitals continues to drive India’s healthcare transformation and cement its position as a global leader in cancer care.
